James Earl Thompson[1] (November 25, – January 31, ), known professionally as Jimmy Johnson, was an American blues guitarist and singer.[2]
Early life
Johnson was born in Holly Springs, Mississippi,[2][3] on November 25, [4] Several of his brothers had careers in music, among them soul musicianSyl Johnson and bassist Mack Thompson, who played with Magic Sam.[2] In his younger years, he played piano and sang in gospel groups.
He and his family moved to Chicago in , where he worked as a welder and played guitar in his spare time
